Glavalume Panels Explained: Material Specs, Production Lines and Buying Risks

A facade schedule lands on your desk with four lines on it: 4 mm panel, A2 fire class, 0.5 mm skins, PVDF finish. Then the buyer asks the obvious question: is Glavalume the same thing, or something different? The short answer is that Glavalume is a trade name for aluminium-faced, coil-coated material supplied as flat sheet or as a composite panel with a mineral-filled core. The name tells you the family. It does not tell you the grade, the fire classification or the bond strength, and those are the three things that decide whether the panel is approved or rejected.

That gap between a product name and a test report is where most purchasing mistakes begin. If you are buying panels, you need documents, not adjectives. If you are manufacturing them, you need a line that can hold the tolerances the documents promise, sheet after sheet, at the end of a long shift.

Glavalume describes a construction, not a performance level

In practice the name is used for two related products. The first is coil-coated aluminium sheet, where the metal coil is cleaned, pre-treated, primed and top-coated before it ever reaches a lamination line. The second is the composite panel built from that coated skin, a mineral-filled core and a polymer bond film, pressed and cooled into a flat board.

Both are legitimate products under the same label, and this is exactly why a purchase order that says only Glavalume is risky. A 3 mm interior panel and a 4 mm A2 exterior panel can carry the same family name and behave nothing alike under fire testing, on a 20-metre elevation, or after eight years of rain and thermal cycling.

The numbers that decide whether a Glavalume panel passes

When we audit specifications with panel makers, the same handful of values comes up again and again. They are unglamorous and they are decisive.

• Fire classification. A2 to EN 13501-1, typically written A2-s1,d0, or A2 to GB 8624 for the domestic market, is the entry ticket for high-rise cladding. B1 grades suit lower-risk applications and interior work.
• Peel strength. Exterior-grade panel should show at least 4 N/mm in a 180-degree peel test at room temperature, with a wet or boiling-water result that does not collapse. A high ambient figure with poor wet retention points to a weak bond film or under-cured lamination.
• Coating build. A 70 percent PVDF system at roughly 23 to 27 micron dry film is the normal exterior benchmark. Polyester at 16 to 20 micron is fine indoors and will chalk outdoors.
• Core density. Mineral-filled A2 core usually runs 1.6 to 1.9 g/cm3, against 1.10 to 1.20 for polyethylene. Density below the stated range means more polymer and less filler, which shows up in the fire test before it shows up anywhere else.
• Skin thickness. Nominal 0.5 mm is common, but the tolerance is what matters. A skin that runs 0.42 mm still passes a caliper check at the edges and still fails a wind load calculation.
• Geometry. Panel thickness plus or minus 0.2 mm, width plus or minus 2 mm, length plus or minus 3 mm and bow no more than 0.5 percent of length are realistic acceptance figures for a well-run line.

How the material is actually built, step by step

Panel quality is decided before the panel exists. Roughly 60 percent of the final performance comes from the coil coating stage, because a skin with poor pre-treatment or an under-cured topcoat cannot be rescued downstream. Degreasing, conversion coating, primer and topcoat all need their own oven zone with a controlled peak metal temperature; drifting a few degrees low gives you a coating that passes the factory thumb test and fails a solvent rub six months later.

The coated coil then moves to lamination. Coated skins, core sheet and bond film are fed together, heated, consolidated through a double-belt or roll press and cooled under tension. The press zone sets the peel strength; the cooling zone sets the flatness. Panels that bow after delivery were usually still warm when they were cut.

Some buyers skip the sheet route entirely and buy composite material in coil form, then uncoil, flatten, cut and fold it in their own workshop. That works well for continuous cladding runs and for fabricators who want to reduce panel scrap, but it moves the flatness problem to the cutting line.

Where two lines that look identical start to diverge

Two A2 composite lines can carry the same headline speed and the same width and still produce very different panels. The difference usually shows up in four places: tension control through the accumulator, the number and zoning of the ovens, the core forming and metering section, and the cooling and flattening section at the exit.

Choosing a line against your sales plan, not against a brochure

Before comparing quotations, write down the product mix you intend to sell for the next five years. An interior-fit-out producer running B1 panel at 3 mm and 4 mm has very different needs from a facade supplier shipping A2 at 4 mm and 6 mm with 0.5 mm skins. Speed follows from that mix: 3 to 5 m/min is normal for a mixed-order line, while 8 to 12 m/min only pays back if you have the order book to keep it fed.

Width is the other quiet cost. A line built for 1220 mm cannot be stretched to 1500 mm later without replacing the press section, the ovens and most of the handling. If export work is in your plan, buy the wider line at the start. Our engineers walk through these trade-offs in more detail in this guide to choosing a high-performance metal composite panel production line.

There is also the material side to settle. A2 core sheet, coated coil and bond film all have to arrive on schedule and within specification, otherwise a good line produces out-of-spec panels and the argument moves to the supplier. Buying equipment and consumables from the same technical source removes a layer of finger-pointing, but only if the supply contract states the density, thickness and adhesion values you are entitled to reject against.

A short procurement checklist

1. State the fire class and the standard it must be tested to, with the report attached to the purchase order.
2. Ask for peel strength values including wet retention, not a single room-temperature figure.
3. Specify coating system, resin content and dry film thickness by name, and require a sample for solvent rub testing.
4. Set thickness, width, length and bow tolerances in writing, and agree the sampling plan for inspection.
5. Visit a running line if you are buying equipment, and watch a changeover rather than a demonstration.
6. Confirm spare parts, remote support and on-site commissioning before signing, because a stopped line costs far more than a spare roll.

None of this makes Glavalume complicated. It simply separates a family name from a specification, which is where every good panel decision starts.
